On August 1st-6th, ORNL participated in SAGE Journey, a career development program to empower young women to consider STEM careers, increase their higher education aspirations, and educate them on career opportunities at National Laboratories. SAGE stands for Science Accelerating Girls’ engagement in STEM. Along with ORNL, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), LBNL (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory), LANL (Los Alamos National Laboratory), FNAL (Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory), and LLNL provided virtual opportunities for 61 high school girls to participate in job shadowing, career talks, professional growth sessions, research projects, community events featuring each lab, and a fireside chat with the directors of each lab. All sessions were facilitated by over 50 volunteers from participating labs. SAGE began at SLAC four years ago, and has grown to include national laboratories across the country. Historically, a residential camp experience at SLAC, the camp has occurred virtually since 2020. ORNL plans to host in-person participants in summer of 2022.
